While there are a variety of ways to structure direct cash programs to address poverty, EMPath’s latest paper looks at guaranteed income, a meaningful, monthly infusion of cash that comes with no restrictions.  

"What Works: Guaranteed Income,” the third edition of our “What Works” series, particularly focuses on the increased interest in the potential of pairing guaranteed income with another proven intervention—economic mobility coaching.  

Across a variety of backgrounds, many people who have received guaranteed income have expressed a desire to have a coach to help them navigate how to best use their new funds.  At EMPath, we believe that economic mobility coaching has the potential to turbocharge guaranteed income programs, helping people move further, faster, and more sustainably out of poverty than cash alone. 

This paper shares highlights from interviews with eight social service organizations around the country that are members of EMPath’s global learning network – the Economic Mobility Exchange™ – and are implementing guaranteed income, most in tandem with our economic mobility coaching approach, Mobility Mentoring®.
