The General Election is almost here. Your vote has the power to elect leaders whose decisions will affect all of our lives, including folks in historically under-resourced communities. What is the registration deadline and election date?

Who are we voting for this year?

  • President: The presidential office is up for election
  • Representative in Congress: All nine MA House seats are up for election
  • Senator in Congress: Ed Markey’s seat is up for election
  • MA Governor’s Council: All eight seats are up for election (Learn more about the MA Governor’s Council)
  • MA House: All 160 seats are up for election
  • MA Senate: All 40 seats are up for election

Is there anything else on the ballot?

Yes. In addition to choosing elected officials, voters are being asked to weigh in on two statewide ballot questions:

Who can vote?

A person can vote in the state of Massachusetts if they:

  1. Are a U.S. Citizen
  2. Are a resident of Massachusetts
  3. Are at least 18 years old by Election Day

In addition, a person is still eligible to vote in Massachusetts if they:

  1. Live in shelter or with a family member (use this address when registering)
  2. Have charges or convictions on their CORI, including a felony

Note: Remember to re-register if you move. If you are not able to vote, you can still educate others on the importance of voting, the candidates, and the ballot initiatives.

How do I register to vote?

Online

You can register online here if you have a signature on file with the Registry of Motor Vehicles. You may pre-register at 16 years old; once you turn 18, your name will be moved to the list of registered voters. Register online by 11:58 p.m. on October 24.

By Mail

  1. Obtain a Registration Form: Visit this page on the Secretary of State’s website and download the form OR call 1-800-462-8683.
  2. Complete the Registration Form: Fill in all required fields and send in proof of identification. Identification requirements can be found here.
  3. Return your completed Registration Form: Mail your form to your local election official. Must be postmarked no later than October 24. You can also hand-deliver the form to the same address.

In Person

If you would like to register in person, you may do so at your local election office on October 24 from 2-4pm and 7-8pm.

How do I vote?

Vote by Mail

If you have NOT submitted an application to vote by mail:

  • All registered voters in MA have received a vote-by-mail application in their mailboxes for State Election. If you did not receive an application, you can apply for a mail-in ballot online.
  • Technically, you have until October 28 to request a mail-in ballot. However, with the election less than two weeks away, if you have not yet requested your mail-in ballot it is recommended that you vote in person early or on Election Day.

If you have submitted an application to vote by mail:

  • Track your ballot request and mail-in ballot here.
  • Once you receive your ballot, complete and return it as soon as possible. Return your ballot by mailing it or hand-delivering it to your local election office, dropping it off at a drop box in your city/town, or dropping it off at any early voting location in your city/town during early voting hours. Ballots CANNOT by emailed or faxed.
  • Mailed ballots must be postmarked by November 3 and received by November 6. It’s recommended that you mail your ballot at least one week before Election Day.
  • If you requested a mail-in ballot, but you’ve now decided you’d rather vote in person, you can do so as long as you haven’t already returned your mail-in ballot.

In-Person Early Voting: October 17-30

All registered voters can vote early in person. In-person early voting for has begun and runs through October 30. Visit the state’s Early Voting page for early voting dates and locations.

In-Person Voting on Election Day: November 3
